Many people celebrating this year’s Notting Hill Carnival were angry that the police had once more used it as an excuse to harass young people.
The police launched pre-carnival raids, arresting 27 people. More than 7,000 officers policed the carnival this year, only just down from 10,000 last year immediately after the riots.
Natalie, a college student from the area, told Socialist Worker, “The police here are ridiculous. My friend has been stopped over 50 times this year and they’ve never found anything on him. They aren’t interested in protecting us. They only look after the rich.”
On the Saturday of the carnival, police arrested 96 people, mostly for public order offences.
Police arrested 15 people in an operation at King’s Cross station involving ten vans and dogs. Officers said they were part of a gang heading for a fight at Carnival. They said some were wearing body armour. But all were later released without charge.
And it wasn’t just the police that annoyed people. Kim said, “This government is a joke. They don’t do anything for us. The nicest thing I can say about Cameron is he is an idiot.”
