Another case of shocking violence towards women by a serving police officer

A cop who could be Scotland’s Wayne Couzens killed himself after carrying out a 14-year spree of rapes and attempted murders.

Alan Greer took his own life in May, but his “truly shocking” offences were not revealed by Police Scotland until two months after his death.

Greer’s criminal activities only came to light because a woman he attacked in her home in Glasgow in 2012 reported the attack at the end of 2025. Greer raped the woman after she called the police to report another crime.

Her courage in stepping forward prompted one of Scotland’s biggest anti-corruption inquiries. It has uncovered a further eight victims, five of whom were sex workers, whom Greer attacked while off duty. It is likely that more victims of his violence will be identified.

Greer had 17 years of apparently unblemished service when he died in May. Once again, it was the courage of survivors who finally brought his crimes to light—not his colleagues or vetting or safeguarding procedures.

After the woman’s complaint was finally investigated, Greer’s home was searched. Cops found multiple mobile phones with thousands of graphic videos and images.

Officers are not yet even halfway through the files but have already identified five sex workers who Greer seriously sexually assaulted.

Some of Greer’s assaults on women were so violent that he would be charged with attempted murder if he was alive. He had also taken inappropriate photographs of two women police officers while they were training.

As Greer’s serial offending emerged, social work officers and local cops visited his home. Greer died by suicide the following day.

In 2018 a sex worker in Glasgow had gone to police to say that a client had been violent towards her and gave them a phone number.

That person was Greer—but the phone number was not traced to him.

Top cops are still insisting that there were no opportunities to spot his offending sooner and no red flags were missed.

Those close to the inquiry say, “It feels a bit like this could be Police Scotland’s Wayne Couzens moment.” Couzens was the Metropolitan police constable who kidnapped, raped and murdered Sarah Everard in 2021.

Sarah was snatched from the street as she was walking home from a friend’s house towards Brixton in south London. Couzens is serving a whole-life sentence.

His case revealed major vetting failures at the Met. Couzens had exposed himself at a McDonald’s drive-thru days before he murdered Sarah but it was not properly pursued. 

Greer could also be compared to David Carrick, a Met police officer who pleaded guilty to multiple counts of rape committed between 2002 and 2021. Carrick is currently serving multiple life sentences.

Police Scotland has suggested that Greer was just one “bad apple” and said that he would not pass vetting checks today. But the whole barrel is rotten.

Both Couzens and Carrick were well known to be violent, misogynist woman-haters. They were protected by the deeply sexist culture embedded in the police force.

Greer’s case shows that it is not just the Met force that protects and enables rapists—the police force is institutionally sexist, and cops are a danger to women.
