ANOTHER flagship privatisation scheme has collapsed in chaos. Newham council in east London is to terminate its £35 million contract with private firm CSL to run the borough’s housing benefit services. The council will bring the service back ‘in house’.

The move is the latest in a series of similar moves. Housing benefit contracts with other private companies in the London boroughs of Lambeth and Hackney have also been cancelled in recent months. Only two years into CSL’s seven-year contract, it has been ended. The service has descended into chaos, with thousands more cases being months late, leading to evictions.
