There was standing room only at a meeting in Hastings last week as pensioners, trades unionists, students and local councillors filled the hall at the trades council’s meeting against public sector cuts.

Chris Baugh, assistant general secretary of the PCS union, spoke about the need to build campaigns across Britain.

He was applauded as he urged campaigners to be ready for direct action of the sort that stopped the poll tax.

Sam Buckley of the trades council reminded the audience that more than two thirds of the population of Hastings is directly dependent on the public sector. Other speakers asked the audience to support the trades council’s Halloween fancy dress rally “the horrors of cuts” which will take place in the town centre at 11am on Saturday 30 October.
