ANTI-NAZI activists are stepping up their campaign against the Nazi BNP and National Front (NF) in Oldham in the run-up to the 20 October Respect anti-racist festival in the town. Campaigners prevented the NF from holding a demonstration in the town centre last Saturday.
‘The response has been getting warmer the nearer the festival gets,’ says Pete Hick, a local trade unionist. ‘Both the heads of the local Labour Party and the NUT teachers’ union have taken 1,000 leaflets each to distribute. We leafleted the Oldham versus Bury local derby football game and got a great response. We’ve done stalls at college, and leafleted local pubs and the Asian areas around Werneth Park where the festival is going to be. We’ve also had a meeting with Asian community leaders and are due to have a meeting for trade unionists this week. We hope as many people as possible from around the country come to Oldham to show that black and white people are united against the Nazis and their racism.’
