University teachers and support staff in the AUT union are balloting for strike action against a background of a national debate on fees and the future of higher education.
The employers’ offer will result in a pay cut for most staff over the next few years and worsening conditions of service. A high vote in favour of strike is crucial to the future of the union and the higher education sector.
The employers’ package means an end to national pay and the introduction of job evaluation based on managerial criteria such as the number of people you manage rather than academic criteria.
The government’s fee proposals are part of this market reform.
