Around 1,500 people marched through Ayr last Saturday to protest against the cuts being imposed by the local council.

South Ayrshire’s Tory council intend to close sports centres, a swimming pool, the local theatre and a golf course. Working class areas will be most affected by this.

The representatives of local action groups from these areas organised the march.

Many people felt that the only leisure facilities left will soon be privatised.

Each facility has an action committee set up.

The march was a great sign that they are beginning to work together.

Socialists on the march pointed out that the government had cut the support to local authorities yet were happy to prop up the rich bankers. This message went down well with the marchers.
