BA man in charge

THE NEW chief of British Airways, Rod Eddington, will take over from Bob Ayling this week. He will get half a million pounds a year. He is getting this massive handout in order to slash jobs at British Airways. Eddington got plenty of practice from his last job at Australian airline Ansett.

He cut 3,000 jobs, one fifth of the workforce at the airline, in his first three years. He was brought into the Ansett job by multi-billionaire media tycoon Rupert Murdoch, who had a stake in the airline. Murdoch, a good friend of Tony Blair, is reported to have pushed for Eddington to get his new job at British Airways.
