History was made last week with the result of elections for national officers in the NUT. Tower Hamlets teacher and Socialist Teachers Alliance (STA) candidate Baljeet Ghale came first of two vice presidents, and will become the first black president of the NUT in 2007.

She won with votes transferred from two other left candidates. Also, STA-supported candidate Ian Murch from Bradford becomes NUT national treasurer from next April.

“It’s not only a boost for every black trade unionist that Baljeet has won,” says Jo Lang, president of Harrow NUT, “she was also one of only six executive members to vote against acceptance of the government’s pensions deal.”
