Bankrolling the bigots

AT LEAST six of Scotland’s leading millionaires have piled in behind Brian Souter’s bigoted campaign to keep the anti-gay Section 28 law. They are bankrolling a private referendum over Section 28 which is likely to cost at least 1 million. Keeping Section 28 means school children discovering their sexuality face an atmosphere of fear and intimidation.

Brian Souter, the boss of Stagecoach, and his sister, Ann Gloag, are the richest people in Scotland, worth 565 million. They have been joined by KwikFit boss Sir Tom Farmer, and Tom Hunter, head of Sports Division, who sacked hundreds of workers last year.

Pat Grant of the giant freezer firm, Norfrost, and Sir David McNee, former Metropolitan Police commissioner, are also part of the bigots’ club. At least four of those in the Keep Section 28 campaign are leading supporters of the Scottish National Party, including Jim Sillars, SNP member of the Scottish Parliament.
