Birmingham sales soar

On Monday morning Socialist Worker sellers put out 20,000 leaflets at workplaces across the West Midlands over the jobs massacre at Rover. 30 papers were sold at Longbridge, 24 at Land Rover, 9 at Hardy Spicers, 8 at Cadbury’s, 6 at the main postal depot in Birmingham and 5 at Ingersol Rand in Walsall. On Saturday 419 papers were sold in the centre of Birmingham, while on Monday 151 were sold at lunchtime and another 138 at New Street Station in the evening! 71 papers were sold in Birmingham on Tuesday lunchtime. Elsewhere in Birmingham 53 papers were sold in Northfield and 40 in Solihull on Saturday.

Not to be outdone, east London sellers rushed out a leaflet on Monday over the threatened job losses at Ford’s Dagenham plant. 29 papers were sold on the gate. In Glasgow sellers reacted to the witch-hunting of Romanian refugees who have been settled in the Springburn area by doing a Saturday sale in the area with a petition saying “Welcome here”. 30 papers were sold.

Other workplace sales included 18 at Riverside House council office in Greenwich, 15 at Manchester Royal Infirmary, 11 at Glacier Metals and 6 at Scottish Power in Cathcart in Glasgow, while 5 were sold to striking Stagecoach bus workers in Ayr. Every area of the country is receiving extra copies of Socialist Worker this week. We are asking for extra street sales over Rover and the other job losses on the streets in the evening rush hour and outside workplaces-especially car plants, car component plants, steel plants, shipyards, and manufacturing industry in general.

In the last week 14 people joined the Socialist Workers Party in Birmingham; 2 in Reading, Clydebank, Norwich, Newcastle, Stretford and Tottenham; 1 in Edinburgh, Elephant and Castle, University of North London, Woolwich, Manchester University and Warwick University.
