World leaders will gather in London on Thursday of next week for a “war council” on Afghanistan and Yemen.

European leaders, US secretary of state Hillary Clinton and Hamid Karzai, the president of Afghanistan, are all expected to attend.

Brown called the conference in a desperate attempt to shore up support for the occupation of Afghanistan.

Brown and Clinton will use the conference to pressure the other countries involved in the occupation to commit more soldiers and back Barack Obama’s recent surge of troops to Afghanistan.

The growing problems for the US and Britain were shown when the Taliban launched a series of spectacular attacks in the Afghan capital of Kabul on Monday.

Around 20 Taliban fighters battled security forces, seized buildings and carried out suicide bombings, with at least 17 people killed.

The attacks highlighted the fragility of Karzai’s regime.

He is a discredited president. His own parliament rejected ten of his 17 recommended candidates for the cabinet a second time.

The addition of Yemen to the agenda shows how the major powers have earmarked the country as the new front of the “war on terror”.

Stop the War has organised a protest at the conference to show these leaders the anger that exists at their disastrous wars and their plans to extend them to new countries.
