BMA employees to strike over performance related pay

Members of the GMB union who work at the British Medical Association (BMA) have voted overwhelmingly for strike action over an imposed system of performance related pay.

Some 72 percent of workers voted for strike action and 84 percent for action short of a strike.

This is the first time in the 175-year history of the BMA that it faces industrial action by its own staff.

Workers are angry that a system of pay consistently opposed by the BMA for its doctor members is being imposed on its own staff.

Performance related pay was introduced at the BMA in 2004 without negotiation.

BMA staff have found it to be a divisive system that pits colleague against colleague within departments to fulfill a pre-defined management quota.

Dave Kent, a GMB organiser said, “The BMA would be in uproar if performance related pay was introduced for doctors in the manner the BMA has done it to its own staff.

“It is the height of hypocrisy for management to persist with this discredited, demotivating and disastrous system.”
