A brutal racist attack on a 17 year old Asian woman in a park in Rochdale last week left her suffering horrific injuries.
One of her attackers had taunted her about the fascist British National Party (BNP) moments before she was hit.
This is just one of a string of racist attacks that have taken place across the north west of England in the last fortnight.
This is the area where BNP leader and convicted Holocaust denier Nick Griffin was elected as an MEP last month.
It is further proof that racist attacks follow wherever the BNP makes gains.
The woman told a local newspaper that she had taken her younger sisters to play on the swings when “a guy started saying stuff about the BNP.
“He told me he was more British than I was and that I didn’t belong here.”
She said she was upset by the racist comments, adding, “At the end of the day, we’re all human beings. It doesn’t matter what race we are.”
Following the verbal abuse, the woman was almost blinded by a blow that left part of her attacker’s bracelet embedded just centimetres from her eye.
The BNP has attempted to convince people that it is a “respectable” democratic party. In reality it is a Nazi party that stirs up race hatred wherever it gets a foothold.
Local residents have been shocked by the attack.
Sam O’Brien is a Unison union steward in Rochdale and the secretary of Greater Manchester Unite Against Fascism (UAF).
He told Socialist Worker, “People in Rochdale have been horrified by this racist attack.
“We need to unite the majority of people who are against racist violence and fascism.
“One of the initiatives we are taking in the north west is to invite trade unions, faith and community groups and anti-racists to the UAF emergency national conference in Manchester on 18 July.
“We will also be organising transport so that people from the region can join the protest against the BNP’s ‘Red, White and Blue’ festival in Derbyshire, next month.”
