British Airways (BA) cabin crew last week voted by a fantastic 78.5 percent for strikes on a 75 percent turnout. This is a bigger vote than in their last ballot.
Unite union leader Len McCluskey will meet reps of Bassa, the cabin crew section of the union, this week.
He should name strike dates and launch a militant programme of action.
BA wants to destroy the union. Boss Willie Walsh has slashed jobs, attacked pay, removed travel concessions and sacked union activists.
Workers have shown fantastic determination, taking 22 days of strikes and winning huge support.
But their former general secretaries Derek Simpson and Tony Woodley didn’t measure up to the task.
McCluskey has told crew, “I will not let you down. I will make certain that whatever you want, you will get.” That’s good—but workers can’t rely on union leaders.
Crew should demand McCluskey calls strikes and throws the whole weight of the union behind the dispute.
