British Telecom (BT) is to make over 15,000 workers from across Britain redundant this year – a tenth of its total workforce. This follows the culling of a a similar number of jobs last year.
The company reported huge loses, despite its revenue increasing by 3 percent to £21.4 billion last year. It was also revealed that Lord Livingston, BT’s chief executive is in line for a £680,000 cash bonus.
Many of the job losses will come in areas already hard hit by unemployment, from Scotland to the West Midlands.
Incredibly the CWU union deputy general secretary Andy Kerr described the job losses as “challenging”.
The Financial Times reported last Friday that one third of last year’s job cuts were among permanent workers.
The CWU should be organising a fightback rather than pledging to work with management.
