Call this a boom?

THERE WAS a higher rate of job losses in January and March of this year than at any other time over the last three years. A new survey by the Labour Research Department shows that redundancies are hitting hard, especially in manufacturing industry.

Over 11,500 people have been made redundant over the last two months. Textile firm Laidlaw & Fairgrieve in Dalkeith and Selkirk, Scotland, announced its closure this week with the loss of 290 jobs.

It is owned by Dawson International. Another Dawson-owned plant, the Ballantyne Knitwear factory in Bonnyrigg, was due to close this Friday. Some 90 workers will lose their jobs. The outgoing chief executive of Dawson recently got a 768,000 “performance bonus”.
