Council workers in Plymouth have called for a ballot over the derecognition of their Unison union branch.
The union members are fighting the Tory council’s attempts to use a legal trick to force through job and pay cuts that Unison had refused to sign up to.
Some 80 Unison members came to a lunchtime union meeting on Wednesday of last week, and passed the motion to “consider balloting for industrial action”.
An additional evening meeting for shift workers who couldn’t make it at lunchtime also endorsed the decision.
Before the meeting, trade unionists and supporters from across Plymouth rallied outside the council’s offices.
“Our job is to argue to defend and improve conditions, not to find ways in which they can be reduced,” the Unison branch said in a statement.
The best way to do that is to start the ballot for action.
