Activists in Chelmsford were set to defend the city from the English Defence League (EDL) this Saturday. United Chelmsford, a local grassroots group, was organised to oppose them.
The march comes after a racist attack on a woman on Friday of last week Hannah Bance, 26, was attacked by two people after facing racist abuse. She suffered a black eye, a broken rib and a number of other injuries.
Steve Collins of United Chelmsford told Socialist Worker, “The recent presence of the EDL has bolstered the confidence of local racists. This is likely to become more common if the EDL gain a foothold in the area. This is exactly why we need to stand against the EDL”
