The AUT and Natfhe lecturers’ unions have been continuing their exam and marking boycott this week.
London Student newspaper held a meeting on Thursday of last week for students to find out about the dispute. AUT deputy general secretary Malcolm Keight spoke about why the action was necessary and why it was important that students and lecturers fought together.
He said, “The people who are refusing to pay lecturers a decent wage are the same people who pushed for tuition fees and continue to push for them to be raised.
“The vice-chancellors may say at the moment that they are on the students’ side – but they are not. Student-lecturer ratios are rising.
“The cost of going to university is rising. And the employers are the only people benefiting from this.”
The meeting ended with a representative of the University of London Union, who have refused to take a position in the dispute, saying that information would be sent out to all students explaining the dispute.
Lecturers and student unions across Britain must come together to hold meetings to explain the dispute to students and to get them on side.
It is also vitally important that unions set up dispute committees that are ready to act if the employers victimise people involved in the action.
