LAING O’ROURKE construction workers at the Channel Tunnel site, King’s Cross, were forced to sit in again on Wednesday of last week as management reneged on a commitment to recognise the GMB union.

Workers had occupied the canteen a week before in a bid to get the company to recognise four elected stewards and allow a GMB official onto the site.

After agreeing to the demand, managers then refused to answer union phone calls.

Around 100 workers reoccupied the canteen and this time refused to leave until the GMB official arrived on site. This time a meeting did take place with the union, and further meetings have been set up.

At a meeting on Thursday night local residents and other trade unionists pledged support for the workers’ campaign for a renegotiated contract.
