Copenhagen climate summit offers no solutions

The United Nations (UN) climate talks in Copenhagen will begin in less than three weeks time. They will be a sham.

World leaders and ministers will travel from across the globe to be there. But there will be no agreements reached and no binding targets to cut carbon emissions.

Barack Obama is the latest to admit that time has run out to reach a legally binding agreement on cutting carbon emissions.

He may not even bother to attend the talks.

Like climate minister Ed Miliband, Obama hopes that world leaders might be able to develop “targets”. But we already have targets. What we need is agreement on how they can be met.

Time and time again, our rulers fail to tackle climate change.

Carbon emissions are having a bigger impact faster than previously expected. We need more action – and we need it sooner rather than later.

Climate change is one of the most serious threats that we face. Extreme, unpredictable weather, such as droughts, floods, heatwaves and hurricanes, will hit the poorest people the hardest.

We can’t rely on our rulers to save the planet. Ordinary people have the power to stop climate change – that’s why everyone must pull out all the stops to make the London climate protest on 5 December as big as possible.
