Respect councillors in Tower Hamlets, east London, are fighting an attempt by a local housing association to snap up some of the few remaining council houses in Poplar.
“This is the third time that the Poplar Harca housing association has tried to take over the Coventry Cross estate,” councillor Rania Khan told Socialist Worker.
“There have been two ballots rejecting stock transfer already, but Harca is adamant that it wants to take over the whole area.”
Rania joined other housing campaigners on Sunday of last week talking to local residents to build support for a no vote. “The majority of people we spoke to are voting no,” said Rania. “They are angry at the council for not doing repairs.”
Tower Hamlets Respect councillors will join the RMT rail union’s demonstration next week against London mayor Ken Livingstone’s plans to privatise the East London underground line. The protest starts at 11am outside City Hall on Thursday 13 December.
