Anti-racist activists in Waltham Forest, east London, have called a day of action against the racist English Defence League (EDL) on Saturday of this week. The EDL plans to march there on 27 October.

Campaigners in the We Are Waltham Forest group and Unite Against Fascism (UAF) have built a strong campaign against the racists. Dozens of shops display posters advertising the counter-protest.

Dean Harris, an activist in the area, said, “We are completely united and we will not tolerate racists and fascists marching through our streets.”

UAF is calling for a national mobilisation to the counter-protest. Meanwhile over 200 people demonstrated in Sunderland last Saturday against an alliance of Nazi groups.

The Nazis have been trying to foment racist divisions in the Millfield area where a small mosque is to be built. The EDL plans to march in Rotherham, south Yorkshire, on Saturday of this week. Rotherham UAF has organised a multicultural celebration from 11am.
