Prior to his elevation to the premiership, Gordon Brown’s advisers repeatedly claimed he would unveil a “big initiative” on housing.

They mentioned support for the “fourth option” – releasing money held by local authorities to build new council homes. But since Brown entered 10 Downing Street, we have not heard a word.

This gives added urgency to next week’s “Stand Up for Council Housing” conference called by Defend Council Housing. It will bring together campaigners, MPs, tenants, councillors and trade unionists.

Speakers include MPs Frank Dobson and Austin Mitchell, and leading trade unionists Heather Wakefield, Gail Cartmel and Jack Dromey.

DCH conference, Thursday 12 July, TUC Congress House, Central London, 10.30am to 4.30pm. For more details phone 020 7987 9989 or go to » www.defendcouncilhousing.org.uk
