Some 200 people crammed into the community hall at the al-Furqan Mosque in Woodlands, Glasgow, last Friday night for a passionate debate about defending civil liberties. Speakers included Jamal al-Harith who gave a moving account of his two years detained in Guantanamo Bay.
Ashfaq Ahmad, father of Babar Ahmad, spoke to the meeting about the detention of his son under anti-terror legislation and the campaign to stop his extradition to the US.
The Labour MP Mohammed Sarwar was heckled when he attempted to defend New Labour’s new anti-terrorism legislation and when he claimed that the Labour government isn’t trying to exploit the issue of asylum and immigration for political ends.
Babar Ahmad’s extradition hearing was due to start on Wednesday 2 March. We will carry a news update later this week
