Over 400 skilled workers at defence electronics company Selex Galileo were set to strike on Thursday of this week over pay.

The company offered a below-inflation pay rise of 2.5 percent or an annual increase of £750. Unite union leaders described this as “insulting and unfair”.

Last year the firm—which manufactures specialist equipment for the Typhoon fighter aircraft—made a profit of £24,900 for every worker.

Some 61 percent of workers voted yes to strikes in a ballot of sites in Edinburgh, Luton, Basildon and Southampton. More strikes are set for 15 and 22 December, and 5 January.
