The key issue at Gate Gourmet is now the fate of those the company brands as “troublemakers”.

Some of these people spoke out against the company’s assault on its workforce.

Some were “too slow” to leave when ordered out of the building.

The number of “troublemakers” has been estimated at 80 or 350, depending on the company’s mood at the time.

Some 300 sacked workers have applied for voluntary redundancy, leaving 337 who want to return, including many of the “troublemakers”.

The company says that the selection process which decides who will get redundancy money and who is allowed back will include “assessing workers’ skills and knowledge, attendance and disciplinary records”.

One sacked worker told Socialist Worker, “We are still defiant and warmed by the solidarity from so many people.

“But we have worries that some of us are going to get left behind, seen as ‘obstacles’ to a deal.

“We all came out together. The union has said it will achieve justice, so it is very important that we achieve an honourable result.”

Those called “troublemakers” are heroes. They must not be abandoned.
