The family of Cherry Groce has launched a petition demanding that legal aid be granted for an inquest into her death.
In 1985, Dorothy “Cherry” Groce was paralysed below the waist when she was shot by police who raided her home. The incident sparked off the major riots in Brixton.
Cherry died in April 2011 having spent 26 years in a wheelchair.
Last week Metropolitan police publicly apologised for the shooting. The statement comes ahead of the inquest this June into Cherry’s death.
Documents have been obtained revealing that a pathologist for her family and another for the police had both concluded that there was a causal link between the shooting and her eventual death.
Cherry’s family have been denied legal aid and without it can’t afford a lawyer to represent them at the inquest and ask questions of the police.
