Activists gathered in Liverpool city centre for a mass leafleting last Saturday in protest at police harassment of political stalls.
Ten different stalls were set up, so that 30 or 40 people were leafleting.
Dan, from the local Socialist Worker group, said, “Our stall – and those of several other groups – have been subjected to continuous police harassment all year.
“A number of different groups, including Stop the War, Keep Our NHS Public, animal rights activists, the Socialist Party and Campaign Against the Arms Trade, agreed to set up stalls at the same time in a show of defiance.
“Within minutes the police had arrived, and began confiscating the tables and materials. While they were doing this a crowd began to gather.
“The police arrested two people.
“By this time the crowd had grown to about 200 people. They surrounded the police van, preventing it from leaving, and chanting ‘Let them go’ and ‘Freedom of Speech’.
“It was only after calling in two extra vans that the police were able to force their way through the crowd.
“Onlookers were angry at the police action.”
People marched to the police station in protest.
Campaigners plan to set up stalls again next week, hopefully in greater numbers.
