NUT union members at Langdon School in east London delivered another solid strike today, Thursday.

The strike was part of an ongoing dispute over oppressive management and excessive workload.

Some 70 teachers struck. Parents were among supporters who joined the picket lines. Union reps from Newham and Redbridge also visited, along with two members of the union’s national executive committee.

Today also marked a serious escalation on the part of school management, which is running a determined and open operation to break the strike. Today they brought in dozens of supply teachers from agencies to cross picket lines and break the strike.

They said they hadn’t been told that there was a strike at the school. Those going in said they had been given temporary contracts for the duration of the strikes – by a Labour-run local authority.

This is unprecedented in NUT disputes.

Teachers will strike again on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of next week. They urgently need support from the trade union movement in what has now become a serious battle for the right to strike.
