Campaigners in Barnsley held a protest meeting last Saturday and launched a campaign to stop the demolition of Barnsley Central Library.
“This library changed my life. We have got to stop them closing it,” one activist told the 50-strong meeting.
The local Labour council has announced plans to move the library into an abandoned office building and demolish its building to make way for a new college building.
Local activists saw this as inevitably meaning that the library service would suffer and started campaigning against the demolition.
We launched a petition and one campaigner alone has collected over 800 signatures in the first week.
The council has already granted a four week consultation period which was not part of its original plans.
This shows the potential of the campaign to force it to back down.
