Protesters stand up to Katie Hopkins

Anti-racists Edinburgh opposed right wing propagandist Katie Hopkins, who was on tour in the city, last Friday night.

Hopkins wrote in 2015, “Make no mistake, these migrants are like cockroaches”, in a newspaper column in The Sun headlined, “Rescue boats? I’d use gunships to stop migrants”.

She referred to migrants in Calais trying to head to Britain as “a plague of feral humans”. Anti-racists shouted, “We welcome every refugee. Throw Katie Hopkins in the sea!”

Protester Lorna told Socialist Worker that there was “vibrant and lively protest tonight where showed Katie Hopkin’s racism is not welcome here.

“With a brilliant panel of speakers at the rally, a diverse and young crowd of protesters including local residents, we made our message loud and clear— refugees are welcome and Katie Hopkins isn’t.

“Today was a victory for anti-racists everywhere. We had a few vile racists try to stir up shit, and they were chased out with their tails between their legs.” Students from the Edinburgh university’s Palestine encampment joined the protest.
