There’s a sense of elation all around Damascus, a mood of victory.

Everyone’s smiling, including the border guards and officials who are normally extremely grumpy.

There are posters of Hizbollah leader Nasrallah everywhere and big banners extolling the victory of resistance – even the statue of Saladin in front of the citadel has been decked out in Hizbollah colours.

People are talking about how Israel has been given a massive slap in the face, and arguing over whether Nasrallah’s stature is equal to or even greater than that of Nasser – most say greater.
