Issue 2050

London mayor Ken Livingstone has found an additional £15 million for Esol (English for Speakers of Other Languages) provision in London.

That is a direct result of our energetic campaigning over the last few months.

But it does not mean that the battle is over.

The total adult further education (FE) cuts in London amount to £23 million.

The £15 million could potentially prevent hundreds of redundancies, at least in the short term.

But the details and the strings that may be attached are not yet known.

In every college the cuts and redundancies are being implemented with obscene speed in order to be in place by the autumn term.

This leaves nobody time to consider their personal future or look for alternative work in any planned way.

The timing is also making it very hard to organise collectively against the cuts, with the first date for possible strike action being mid-June when a lot of courses will already be over.

The money from Livingstone makes it possible to change this timetable.
