A key part of British Airways bosses’ plans is to bring in “new fleet” – workers on lower wages and worse conditions.
They also want to smash some of their existing workers’ rights now – and erode the rest over time.
Cabin crew who retire or leave the company will be replaced by new employees, on worse pay and conditions.
Eventually, all existing rights will be wiped out.
Workers on the new contracts will be working with reduced crew numbers, shorter rest times, fewer holidays and reduced pay.
The union expects pay to drop to around £11,000 for most crew.
BA claims that it wants to maintain the conditions of existing staff.
But in reality it wants to use the new contracts to divide workers.
It is attacking all workers and the way to stop it is for them to stay united.
BA boss Willie Walsh says the company has to make savings.
But, in Walsh’s own words, “At the end of the last quarter we had reserves of over £2 billion.
“We are prepared for this strike and can afford it.”
BA will spend billions to try and smash the strike.
Money has already been dished out to train up scabs.
There are rumours that potential strike-breakers were paid overtime when training.
The company presumably had to hire temps to cover the scabs’ regular jobs while training and will have to hire them again if strikes go ahead.
Sources within the Unite union estimate the cost of scabbing has already run into “hundreds of thousands of pounds, if not millions”.
The idea that BA is an impoverished company is nonsense.
It is just using the economic crisis as a smokescreen to attack workers.
