The London firefighters have received messages of support from across the world.
Derek Best of the NZPFU firefighters’ union in New Zealand—where firefighters are currently rescuing lives after the earthquake—writes, “Firefighters in New Zealand are only too familiar with this despicable tactic [sackings].
“In 1997 all New Zealand firefighters were similarly sacked and ‘invited’ to apply for new positions on inferior conditions…
“This tactic was resisted on a number of levels and in the end did not succeed.”
Peter Marshall, national secretary of the United Firefighters Union of Australia, writes, “I wish to signal our staunch support and solidarity with the FBU and your London members.
“Mass sackings to leverage a decimated roster and reduced fire cover standards are nothing short of abhorrent.
“We stand by you in your struggle against the London Fire Brigade.”
