Around 100 workers at the Two Sisters poultry processing firm in Smethwick, in the West Midlands, have been taking all out strike action against racism.
Workers walked out on Wednesday of last week after bosses first suspended a union rep who reported a racist incident, and then suspended another who wanted to represent him in a formal interview.
A Unite union rep told Socialist Worker, “We had no choice but to down tools, hold a sit-in and then walk out.
“We won’t go back until all the suspensions are lifted and no one is threatened with losing their job.”
Bosses have since suspended a further 60 workers for taking part in the sit-in and have called the police to the factory “to maintain order”.
Joe Clarke, a regional official from the workers’ Unite union, told cheering strikers on Friday of last week, “Your action has already won major concessions from management.
“They have agreed to end all disciplinary action and keep you on full pay until next week while negotiations continue.”
