VOTING STARTS this Saturday in the election for mayor of the east London borough of Hackney. The campaign for the Socialist Alliance candidate, journalist Paul Foot, is gathering pace. Last Sunday campaigners were out across all areas of Hackney delivering a special eight-page newspaper. Paul has recently addressed groups of campaigners fighting for disability rights and against nursery closures.

Kim, who was involved in the recent occupation of St John’s nursery in Hackney, says, ‘New Labour lied to us that it was saving nurseries and other facilities. ‘I’m voting Paul Foot because he is against the madness of war in Iraq, because he will back everyone fighting in Hackney and because he will be a thorn in the flesh of New Labour locally and nationally.’

Paul has also addressed groups of workers, including low paid health staff from the local Homerton Hospital. This Saturday, on the first day of voting, Paul and Socialist Alliance supporters will be touring Hackney in a special election ‘battle bus’. On that day the BBC is filming Paul’s campaign. The following day the Socialist Alliance is urging anyone who can to spare an hour or two to help deliver the newspaper.

The voting is by postal ballot, ending on Thursday 17 October.
