Geoff Hoon was Labour’s defence secretary in 2005. Defence giants Westland got a £1.7 billion contract from the Ministry of Defence in March of that year.

Nobody else was invited to bid for it.

Last year an undercover reporter exposed Hoon looking for lobbying work on the side. He was sacked from his job at the Nato military alliance and lost the Labour whip.

He is now happily employed in a top job at Westland.

Key figures in the army have found cushy numbers after leaving the forces.

Former first sea lord Jonathon Band has joined Lockheed Martin.

Ex-chief of the general staff Sir Richard Dannatt has gone to Ricardo, his vice-chief Sir Timothy Granville-Chapman is at Thales.

Air Chief Marshall Sir Glenn Torpy has joined BAE.
