Unite Against Fascism (UAF) held a protest outside the BBC on Monday evening against the airing of the British National Party’s (BNP) election broadcast.

The media workers’ union Bectu backed the protest, along with the Muslim Council of Britain and the Jewish Council for Racial Equality.

Granting the BNP airtime gives the party a boost because it gives it an appearance of respectability.

Within 24 hours of the BNP broadcast during the Euro elections last year, over 2,000 people registered their interest on the party’s website.

During the recent election campaign, the BNP has been on BBC radio and television, and various satellite channels.

The BBC says that the BNP has “electoral support at a national level” and so has to be allowed on to preserve “impartiality”.

This is not true.

There is no legal obligation on any television or radio companies to broadcast the views of any political party.

Weyman Bennett, joint secretary of UAF, said, “When the BNP is on TV it encourages thugs on the street to engage in racist violence.”

Gerry Morrissey, Bectu general secretary, said, “The BNP’s policies are abhorrent to the vast majority of people who live happily in multicultural Britain.”

The BNP manifesto calls for restrictions on what the media and political organisations can say.

The media should expose the fascist nature of the BNP, not allow Nazis to air their vile racist lies unchallenged.
