Glasgow schools

THE GRIM reality of Labour-led Glasgow City Council’s plans to privatise all its secondary schools is becoming clearer. The plans mean handing the schools over to the private consortium 3Ed, which includes Miller Homes and Hewlett Packard. They will build the much needed replacement schools, and extend and repair the rest. They will then rent them back to the council as well as running many other services.

Far from the promised “state of the art schools”, some schools will lose their swimming pools. Sports pitches will disappear from others, and the number and size of classrooms and staffrooms will shrink. Shawlands Academy EIS union branch has called a meeting with parents to discuss the impact of the privatisation scheme on their school. This kind of initiative can start to build a fightback.
