Striking Community Service Supervisors in Glasgow are now in their 12th week of action. Last week 100 Glasgow City Unison union members, local students and school closure protesters joined the supervisors to lobby Glasgow City Chambers.

One supervisor, Donald Macnaughton, addressed the rally saying, “We are not going to be bullied. We want fair pay. We want dignity at work. If we do not get it we are not going back.”

Sudent Pete Rahmand told the crowd, “Students of Glasgow and Strathclyde Universities are proud to stand in support and solidarity with the community service workers. This council has got all its priorities wrong and so has this government.”

Strikers’ morale remains high, boosted by messages of support and donations received from all over the country.

The branch-wide industrial action ballot has been postponed by one week as a result of Electoral Reform Society delays.

A steward told Socialist Worker, “The union could not stand by and let members face wage cuts on 1 April.

“Last week the council announced a tough sickness absence policy where occupational health payments will be routinely withdrawn if workers hit specified trigger points.

“Our message is clear – we have to stand together to fight the wage cuts. We can stand together today to prevent sick colleagues being bullied tomorrow.”

Administrative and clerical workers met last week to discuss single status payments. They rejected proposals for 100 reception workers to take indefinite strike action, with support from a £20 a week levy from the other clerical workers.

Instead the meeting voted to request a ballot for all 400 clerical staff to go on all out strike.
