New revelations have brought the phone hacking scandal back to the feet of David Cameron.

Fresh evidence suggests that Cameron’s former spin doctor Andy Coulson was being paid by News International while employed by the Tories.

Coulson resigned from News of the World (NotW) in January 2007 over phone hacking and started work for the Tories in July that year.

According to the BBC’s Robert Peston, Coulson received cash payments from the paper’s publisher until the end of 2007.

The amount paid, in instalments, is said to be several hundred thousand pounds.

Coulson is also reported to have received other benefits from News International, including private health insurance and a company car for several years.

The alleged payments ended before Cameron became prime minister.

This reintroduces questions about Cameron’s close ties to the Murdoch empire.

The Tories claim that they had no knowledge of these payments to Coulson while he was in their employment.

He resigned as spin doctor earlier this year, again over the phone hacking scandal.
