COUNCIL TENANTS in Farnham and Godalming in Surrey have rejected a plan by Tory-run Waverley Borough Council to hand their homes to a private housing company. Some 78 percent of the 8,000 tenants voted, and almost 57 percent were against the privatisation.
The result is a boost to the growing campaign against the New Labour government’s plan to push councils into the mass privatisation of council homes. It came a week after a 300-strong meeting at the House of Commons saw a swathe of MPs join tenants and trade unionists to build the fight to defend council housing. See full report on page 15.
