SEVEN MORE victims of rail privatisation. They died last week at Potters Bar, just five miles from Hatfield where another crash killed four people 18 months ago. A rail worker warned his managers of loose bolts and unstable track at Potters Bar just three weeks ago.

After the crash Railtrack said the points at Potters Bar had been installed last December. It has now had to admit they are eight years old. Transport secretary Stephen Byers claims the Potters Bar crash was the result of ‘one-off’ circumstances. But nuts were also missing on the points there ten days before the crash.

People died last week because this government puts profit before safety. Jarvis, the contractor responsible for the state of the Potters Bar track, gets £4.4 billion of government contracts. Its boss has a home in the Cayman Islands. Incredibly, London Underground is about to be broken up and sold off to similar firms. There is blood on Byers’ hands, just as there is on the rail bosses’.
