Over 400 attended the Stop the War (StW) Coalition International conference in London last Saturday. Speakers included Labour MP Diane Abbott who talked about the opposition in parliament to David Cameron’s plan to bomb Syria.
She said the vote for war was lost was because of the “years of campaigning, marching and agitating” by thousands of people like those in the hall.
Joan Humphreys and Peter Brierley both spoke from Military Families Against the War.
US journalist Jeremy Scahill talked about the battle to get to the truth about the West’s imperialist wars. They claim they are for the Syrians’ struggle against Bashar al Assad, he said, but not those “opposing the repressive government in Saudi Arabia”.
The issue of Syria generated a sharp debate.
Several StW members argued that whatever differences activists had on the nature of the revolt in Syria there was unity on resisting any Western intervention and supporting the right of the Syrian people to self determination.
