A MEETING of over 100 people in Reading on Monday saw the relaunch of the campaign to free Ishtiaq Ahmed. Local MP Martin Salter was among the speakers. Ishtiaq Ahmed was wrongfully convicted in 1991 of murdering David Pickering, in what became known as the “bedsit murder”. Ishtiaq was sentenced to life imprisonment on the basis of evidence from one witness.
This key witness has since contacted the family admitting that she lied in court, and clearly identifying the actual murderer. The Criminal Cases Review Commission, set up to re – examine cases of injustice, has since acknowledged that it believes recordings of this witness’s new evidence are genuine. Ishtiaq Ahmed’s family are now campaigning for the Commission to send Ishtiaq’s case back to court as quickly as possible.
