Workers in Bedford borough council’s direct services department have been striking on Mondays and Fridays since 21 January over attacks on pay and conditions.

The council wants to cut pay and force staff to work at the weekend.

Richard Gates of the Unite union said, “At the moment they work Monday to Friday, but the department wants to introduce compulsory Saturday morning work.

“Our members are reluctant to do this because they have families and do not want to have to give up the time they spend with them.”

Unite say the council also plans to implement a new method of payment, with workers being paid per job rather than for the amount of work needed to complete the task.
