Police blocked and attacked students at Rome’s La Sapienza university preventing them from leaving the campus in order to join a trade union rally in the city on Wednesday.

Hundreds of students, protesting over cuts, were batoned and pushed back by riot police. One student was beaten by four police officers.

“We wanted to file out to throw shoes against the economy ministry like French students did a week ago,” said one student, adding, “A European link is forming among the various student movements”.

Students in both France and Spain protested against “reforms” in the university sectors on Tuesday and Wednesday.
